Perhaps you have had knee pain for two years. The first steroid injection gave you three good months, the second gave you six weeks, and the third barely helped. Or perhaps you take a painkiller every morning just to manage the office commute, and your doctor has started asking about your kidneys and your sugar levels. Somewhere along the way you heard the words “regenerative medicine” and wondered whether it was real science or just another expensive promise.
It is a fair question, and you deserve a straight answer. In this guide, our pain specialists explain in plain words what regenerative medicine tries to do, how it differs from steroid injections and painkiller tablets, what the main treatments in the field are and how good the evidence is, who it may suit and who should not wait, and what a realistic course of treatment looks like at Dr Heal.
Quick answer
- Regenerative medicine means treatments that aim to support the body’s own repair of damaged tissue, such as tendons, ligaments, cartilage, joint linings and irritated nerves, instead of only switching off pain.
- Steroid injections calm inflammation quickly but do not repair tissue, and repeated doses can raise blood sugar and weaken tendons and bone. Painkillers mask pain for hours.
- The field includes PRP, prolotherapy, hyaluronic acid and cell-based therapies. Evidence differs from one treatment and one condition to the next.
- Results build gradually over weeks, not overnight, and work best alongside exercise, nutrition and correction of the underlying cause.
- It is not for everyone. Fractures, infection, tumours, cauda equina syndrome and fast-worsening weakness need urgent care or surgery.
- At Dr Heal, we use our own steroid-free regenerative injections made through Dr Heal Pharma, always combined with careful diagnosis, functional medicine, nutrition and guided rehabilitation.

Your body repairs itself every day. A cut on your finger closes, a bruise fades, a sprained ankle settles. That repair depends on blood supply, growth signals released by cells, and a healthy environment around the injured tissue.
Some tissues are poor at healing on their own. Tendons, ligaments and cartilage have a thin blood supply, so a small tear or a worn patch can stay irritated for months or years. Think of a tennis elbow that keeps flaring every time you lift a pressure cooker, or a heel that hurts with the first steps of every morning. The tissue is stuck in a cycle of damage and incomplete repair.
Regenerative medicine is the broad name for treatments that try to restart or support that natural repair. The goal is to strengthen the injured structure and calm irritated nerves so that pain eases because the tissue is healthier, not because a signal has been blocked. It does not mean growing a new knee. It means giving a struggling tissue a better chance to heal.
How is it different from steroid injections and painkillers?
Steroids and painkillers have a genuine place in medicine. Steroids are powerful anti-inflammatory drugs, and a single dose can bring quick relief in some conditions. Painkillers help people get through a bad day. The problem is what happens when they become the only plan, repeated again and again while the underlying problem quietly continues.
Steroids switch off inflammation, but inflammation is also part of healing. Repeated steroid doses can thin tendons, soften cartilage and bone, and push up blood sugar for days, as we explain in what repeated steroid injections can do. Daily tablets bring their own risks to the stomach, kidneys and blood pressure, covered in our guide on why painkillers are not the answer for chronic pain.
| Question | Steroid injection | Painkiller tablets | Regenerative approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main aim | Switch off inflammation | Reduce the feeling of pain | Support repair of the injured tissue and calm irritated nerves |
| How fast it works | Often within days | Within an hour or so | Gradually, usually over several weeks |
| How long the effect lasts | Weeks to a few months; often shorter with each repeat | A few hours per dose | Aims for longer-lasting change when combined with rehab; varies by person and condition |
| Common side effects | Raised sugar, flushing, local skin thinning; with repeats, tendon and bone weakening | Acidity and ulcers, kidney strain, raised BP; drowsiness and dependence with some drugs | Usually temporary soreness or stiffness at the injection site for a few days |
| With diabetes or high BP | Needs caution; sugar can rise for several days | Some tablets raise BP and strain kidneys already at risk | Generally more suitable, after a proper check-up |
| Does it treat the cause? | No | No | Aims to, as part of a full plan |
For people with diabetes in particular, this difference is practical, not theoretical. Many of our patients have been told their sugar went haywire after an injection. Read more about why steroid-free care matters for people with diabetes and the common link between frozen shoulder and diabetes.
What treatments come under regenerative medicine?
The field is wide, and quality varies. Here is a fair, plain description of the main options you may hear about, including ones Dr Heal does not offer, so that you can make sense of what you are told elsewhere.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
A small amount of your own blood is spun in a machine to concentrate the platelets, which carry growth factors, and this is injected into the painful area. Studies are most encouraging for early to moderate knee arthritis and some tendon problems, such as tennis elbow. Results depend a lot on how the PRP is prepared, and not every study shows benefit. Our article on who can benefit from PRP for knee pain goes into detail.
Prolotherapy
An older technique in which a mild irritant solution, most often a dextrose (sugar) solution, is injected where ligaments and tendons attach to bone. The idea is to trigger a gentle healing response that tightens and strengthens loose or worn tissue. It usually needs several sessions. Evidence is mixed but reasonable for some knee arthritis and certain tendon and ligament problems.
Hyaluronic acid (“gel” injections)
Hyaluronic acid is a natural part of joint fluid that helps it stay slippery. Injected into an arthritic knee, it may improve lubrication and comfort for some months in some people. It is better described as joint-supportive than truly regenerative, and research results are modest. See how gel injections for knee arthritis work.
Cell-based therapies
These use cells taken from bone marrow or fat, often marketed as “stem cell” treatment. They are the most talked-about and the least settled. Research is ongoing, costs are high, and regulation is strict. Be wary of anyone who promises to regrow cartilage or guarantees you will avoid a knee replacement.
The honest summary: regenerative treatments are not magic, and none of them works for every person. They tend to do best in mild to moderate problems, in people who also strengthen and protect the treated area, and when the diagnosis is correct in the first place. If you have been offered any injection and are unsure, a second opinion before injections or surgery is always reasonable.
What makes Dr Heal’s regenerative injections different?
When an injection is the right step, we use our own regenerative preparation made through Dr Heal Pharma. It contains no steroids, no painkillers and no antibiotics. Instead of numbing the area or shutting down inflammation, it is designed to support the tissue’s own repair process and settle irritated nerve endings.
Just as important is what surrounds the injection. An injection on its own, however good, cannot fix a knee that carries extra weight, a tendon starved of vitamin D, or a spine weakened by months of sitting. So we never offer it as a stand-alone shot. It sits inside a full plan of diagnosis, functional medicine, clinical nutrition and guided exercise. Because it avoids steroids, it is generally easier to plan for people living with diabetes, high blood pressure or thin bones, though we still check each person carefully first.
Which conditions is regenerative treatment used for?
At Dr Heal, we use regenerative care as part of treatment for a wide range of joint, spine and soft-tissue problems, including:
- Knees: early and moderate knee osteoarthritis (our guide to knee arthritis grades on X-ray explains the stages), meniscus tears and knee ligament injuries.
- Spine: a disc bulge or herniated disc, sciatica, cervical spondylosis and lumbar spondylosis, plus facet joint and SI joint pain.
- Shoulder and elbow: frozen shoulder and tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, and rotator cuff tendinitis and partial tears.
- Hand and wrist: De Quervain’s tenosynovitis and trigger finger.
- Hip: pain on the outside of the hip and hip osteoarthritis.
- Foot and ankle: plantar fasciitis and an ankle sprain that has not settled.
- Sports and work injuries: tendon and ligament strains from cricket, badminton, running or heavy lifting. See sports injury recovery without surgery.
Inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout need their own diagnosis and medicines first. Regenerative care may support damaged joints later, but it does not replace treatment prescribed by your rheumatologist.
Who may benefit, and who should not wait?
A regenerative approach often suits people who:
- Have pain from a tendon, ligament, joint or irritated nerve that has lasted more than a few weeks despite rest and basic care.
- Have mild to moderate wear and tear rather than a completely collapsed, bone-on-bone joint.
- Want to avoid repeated steroids, for example because of diabetes, blood pressure or bone thinning.
- Are willing to do their part: exercises, weight and diet changes, and follow-up visits.
It is not the right first step for a fresh fracture, a joint infection, a suspected tumour, or nerve compression that is getting rapidly worse. Some problems truly need surgery, such as cauda equina syndrome, a fully torn tendon in a young active person, or late-stage avascular necrosis of the hip where the bone has collapsed. When that is the case, we tell you plainly and help you get the right care. After a fracture, our guide on helping a broken bone mend explains what supports healing.
When pain needs urgent care, not a course of injections
Call us now on 07969288086. Our doctors are available 24 hours if you have:
- Leg, arm or hand weakness that is getting worse, such as a foot that drags or a grip that fails
- A hot, red, swollen joint with fever
- Severe pain or deformity after a fall, accident or sports injury, or you cannot put weight on the leg
- Pain with unexplained weight loss, night sweats or a past history of cancer
- Unsteady walking or clumsy hands along with neck pain
Medical emergency: if you lose control of your bladder or bowels, feel numb around the groin or inner thighs, or have chest pain or sudden breathlessness, go to the nearest emergency department immediately.
What does a course of treatment look like?
Every plan is personal, but most follow a similar shape. The injection is done in a clean procedure room, guided by careful landmarks or imaging where needed, and takes only a few minutes. You walk out the same day. The area may feel sore, heavy or stiff for two to four days. That is a normal sign the tissue is reacting, and you should avoid taking anti-inflammatory tablets on your own during this time unless your doctor advises them.
Improvement is usually gradual. Many people notice a change after two to six weeks, with further gains over the following months as the tissue strengthens. Some need only one or two sessions; others need a short series spaced a few weeks apart. A few people improve less than we hoped, and when that happens we review the diagnosis and the plan with you rather than simply repeating the injection.
Realistic expectations matter. The aim is less pain, better movement and a return to things you care about: climbing the stairs at home, sitting through a full working day, picking up your grandchild, or riding your two-wheeler without dreading every speed breaker. It is not about a perfect scan.
How Dr Heal treats pain with regenerative care
Across all our treatments, the injection is just one part of the plan. Here is how we work:
- Find the true source of pain. A detailed history and hands-on examination, with your X-ray or MRI read alongside your symptoms. Our in-house laboratory and radiology at our facilities let us check blood tests and imaging under one roof.
- Support healing without steroids. Where it helps, a regenerative injection from Dr Heal Pharma, free of steroids, painkillers and antibiotics, placed precisely at the injured tendon, ligament, joint or nerve.
- Correct what slows repair. We test and treat blood sugar, thyroid, vitamin D and B12 deficiency and inflammation, and guide you on diet for joint health, weight that loads your joints and better sleep.
- Rebuild strength. A guided rehabilitation programme so that the healing tissue learns to carry load again and the muscles around it share the work.
- Follow up until you move freely. We review your pain, movement and daily function at regular visits and adjust the plan as you improve.

What you can do to help your body heal
- Keep moving within comfort. Healing tissue needs gentle load. Complete rest for weeks usually makes stiffness worse.
- Eat enough protein. Dal, eggs, curd, paneer, fish or sprouts at each meal give your body the building blocks for repair.
- Keep sugar under control. High blood sugar slows tissue healing. Take your diabetes medicines as prescribed and keep your check-ups.
- Stop smoking. Smoking reduces blood flow to tendons, discs and bone.
- Do your exercises daily. Ten minutes a day helps more than an hour once a week.
- Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own. Discuss any change with the doctor who prescribed them.
Frequently asked questions
Is regenerative medicine the same as stem cell treatment?
No. Stem cell or cell-based therapy is one small, still-developing part of the field. Regenerative medicine also includes PRP, prolotherapy and other injections that aim to support the body’s own repair. Dr Heal’s injections are not stem cell treatment.
How soon will I feel better after a regenerative injection?
Most people notice change over two to six weeks, with further improvement over a few months. It is slower than a steroid injection because it works on healing rather than just switching off inflammation.
Is it safe if I have diabetes or high blood pressure?
Our injections contain no steroids, so they do not cause the sugar spikes that steroid injections often do. We still check your sugar, blood pressure and overall health before treatment, and keep working with your regular doctor.
Can regenerative treatment help me avoid surgery?
For many people with tendon, ligament, disc and early to moderate joint problems, a full non-surgical plan reduces pain enough that surgery is not needed. No one can guarantee this, and some conditions do need an operation. We will tell you honestly which group you are in.
I have already had steroid injections. Can I still have regenerative treatment?
Usually yes, though we may wait a few weeks after a recent steroid dose. Tell us when and where you had injections, such as an epidural steroid injection, so we can plan safely.
Where can I get steroid-free regenerative treatment in Bengaluru?
Dr Heal Pain Cure Hospital offers steroid-free regenerative care at its HSR Layout and Banashankari branches. Both are open 24 hours, and patients come to us from all over Karnataka.
