Epidural Steroid Injection: What to Know Before You Agree to One

Epidural Steroid Injection: What to Know Before You Agree to One – Dr Rakesh H J, MBBS, FID, DAPT CMDR, IFM (USA), Dr Heal Pain Cure Hospital

You showed your MRI to a doctor, and the advice was an “epidural injection” for the shooting pain down your leg. Maybe you were told it is quick and routine. Yet something makes you pause. Is a steroid going into your spine safe? Will it fix the disc, or just numb things for a while? What if you have diabetes? And is there another way?

These are good questions to ask before you agree to any procedure. This guide explains what an epidural steroid injection is, what it can and cannot do, the side effects worth knowing, and how we at Dr Heal Pain Cure Hospital treat the same back and leg pain without steroids.

Quick answer

  • An epidural steroid injection places a steroid and a local anaesthetic into the space around the spinal nerves to calm inflammation.
  • It is usually advised for leg pain from a disc bulge (sciatica) or narrowing of the spinal canal.
  • It can reduce pain for a period, but it does not repair the disc or correct what caused the problem.
  • Because of the steroid, it can raise blood sugar and blood pressure for a few days, and the number of injections a year is limited.
  • At Dr Heal, we find the root cause first, and any injection we give is a steroid-free regenerative injection, with no steroids, painkillers or antibiotics.

What is an epidural steroid injection?

Your spinal cord and nerve roots are wrapped in a protective covering. The thin space just outside it is called the epidural space. When a disc bulges or the spinal canal narrows, nerve roots passing through this area get pressed and inflamed, and that inflammation sends burning, shooting pain down the leg. To understand why the pain is felt so far from the spine, read why sciatica pain travels down your leg.

In an epidural steroid injection, a needle is guided into this space and a steroid with a local anaesthetic is injected. The anaesthetic numbs the area for a few hours, and the steroid suppresses inflammation over the following days. It is a day procedure, usually done under X-ray guidance, and the patient goes home the same day.

Is it the same as the epidural given in childbirth? It uses the same space, but the purpose is different. A labour epidural numbs the lower body for hours. A steroid epidural is meant to settle nerve inflammation.

What it can do, and what it cannot

It canIt cannot
Reduce nerve inflammation and leg pain for a periodRepair a bulging or herniated disc
Make it easier to sleep and move while the pain is lowerCorrect weak muscles, posture or lifestyle factors that caused the problem
Help some people with spinal canal narrowing walk a little furtherGuarantee lasting relief; pain may return when the effect wears off
Be repeated if it helpedBe repeated freely; steroid injections are usually limited to a few per year

It is also less useful when the pain is only in the back without leg pain, or when the pain comes from worn facet or SI joints or a tight buttock muscle (piriformis syndrome) rather than a nerve root in the spine. That is why the right diagnosis matters more than the injection itself.

Side effects of steroid injections to know about

  • Blood sugar rise. Steroids can push up sugar levels for several days, which matters if you have diabetes. Read back pain treatment for people with diabetes.
  • Blood pressure, flushing, poor sleep or mood changes for a few days.
  • A short flare of pain and soreness at the injection site.
  • Limits on repeating it. Repeated steroid doses can affect bones, hormones and healing, so doctors restrict how often they are given.
  • Rare risks of any spinal injection: infection, bleeding, a severe headache if the covering of the nerves is punctured, and very rarely nerve injury.

If you are pregnant, X-ray-guided spinal injections are generally avoided; see safe ways to ease sciatica in pregnancy.

Questions to ask before you agree to an epidural

  1. Which exact nerve or level is causing my pain, and how do you know?
  2. Does my MRI finding actually match my symptoms?
  3. What will this injection fix, and what will it not fix?
  4. How long is the relief likely to last, and what happens when it wears off?
  5. What happens to my blood sugar or blood pressure?
  6. Is there a treatment that does not use steroids?
  7. What is the plan to stop the pain coming back?

If you did not get clear answers, a second opinion is reasonable. Here are more questions to ask before spine surgery or injections. If your MRI report worries you, read what your MRI report really means and whether a herniated disc can heal on its own.

How Dr Heal treats the same pain without steroids

At Dr Heal Pain Cure Hospital, our aim is to treat the cause of your pain and help you avoid surgery and its complications, with care that is kind to your body and your pocket. Our approach is built on regenerative medicine and functional medicine:

  1. Diagnosis first. A detailed history and examination, with your MRI read alongside your symptoms, to find which nerve, disc or joint is really responsible. Laboratory and radiology are available in-house.
  2. Steroid-free regenerative injections. When an injection is needed, we use our own regenerative medicine prepared through Dr Heal Pharma. It contains no steroids, no painkillers and no antibiotics, and aims to support the body’s own healing rather than only suppress inflammation.
  3. Functional medicine and clinical nutrition. We look at weight, diet, sleep, blood sugar and other factors that keep inflammation going, and correct them.
  4. Guided rehabilitation. Exercises to strengthen the core and protect the spine, starting gently. Here are some gentle exercises for sciatica relief at home.
  5. Regular follow-up until you are moving freely, with honest advice if your condition ever needs a surgeon.

Frequently asked questions

Is an epidural steroid injection safe?

It is a commonly performed procedure, and serious complications are rare. But it is not free of side effects: steroids can raise blood sugar and blood pressure for a few days, and repeated doses are restricted. Ask your doctor how the benefits and risks apply to you.

Will an epidural cure my slipped disc?

No. It can reduce inflammation around the nerve for a period, but it does not repair the disc or correct what caused the problem. Lasting recovery needs treatment of the root cause and rehabilitation.

Do Dr Heal’s injections contain steroids?

No. When an injection is part of your plan at Dr Heal, it is a steroid-free regenerative injection prepared through Dr Heal Pharma, with no steroids, painkillers or antibiotics.

I have diabetes. Is steroid-free treatment better for me?

Steroids can make blood sugar harder to control for several days, so many people with diabetes prefer to avoid them. Our doctors plan your treatment around your sugar levels and other medicines.

I was told I need an epidural. Can I still avoid surgery without one?

Many people with disc-related leg pain recover without surgery. Bring your MRI and reports for a second opinion, and our doctors will tell you honestly what your options are.

Where can I get steroid-free sciatica treatment in Bengaluru?

Dr Heal Pain Cure Hospital treats sciatica and disc problems without surgery or steroids at its HSR Layout and Banashankari branches. Both are open 24 hours. Call 07969288086 to book.
